Box Score BRISTOL, R.I. – The No. 4 seed Roger Williams University women's tennis team continued their winning streak against No. 5 Curry on Tuesday afternoon in a 4-0 victory over the Colonels in the opening round of Conference of New England (CNE) Tournament play.
Roger Williams extends their winning streak to 28 matches with the win, last losing to the Colonels in 1994, and tying with Curry during the 1995 season. The Hawks now hold a 15-1 advantage at the RWU Tennis Courts.
Playing to the decision, the Hawks earned the first doubles match 6-0 with
Gracie McCarthy (Marion, Mass.) and
Gabrielle Petroniro (Wolcott, Conn.) taking the victory at No. 3 doubles over Sam Ferrara and Kaitlyn Foster. Roger Williams clinched the point after a win by No. 1 doubles pairing
Gianna Ferraro (Westerly, R.I.) and
Valentina Abarca (Riobamba, Ecuador), 6-0. The No. 2 doubles match between Curry's Grace Coopee and Cayla Osowski against the Hawks'
Izzy Pecora (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) and
Ella Mancini (Middlebury, Conn.) was left unfinished with a 4-1 lead in favor of Roger Williams.
In singles action, Abarca had a 6-0, 6-0 victory at the No. 3 singles spot over Ferrara for the Hawks, before
Adriana Palmieri (Southington, Conn.) had a similar score in her 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 5 singles. The Hawks clinched the match at the No. 1 singles spot with a 6-1, 6-1 win by Ferraro over Hurley.
Roger Williams (12-3, 4-2 CNE) will take on No. 1 Nichols on Thursday, Oct. 17 at 3:30 pm. The winner will advance to face the victor of No. 3 Endicott at No. 2 Gordon on Saturday, Oct. 19.
