WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. – The Roger Williams University Wrestling team took two of their three dual matches on Saturday afternoon at a Quad Meet hosted by Williams. The Hawks defeated Utica to open the day, 31-17, before following with a 42-9 victory over Cortland. The Hawks lone loss on the day came against New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) foe #17 Williams, 32-14.
Opening the day against the Pioneers, Utica jumped out to a 12-0 lead, but
Shaun McLaughlin (Natick, Mass.) pinned James Post, before
Jon Fabrizio defeated his opponent by Major Decision, cutting into the lead, 12-10. A tech fall victory for Utica at 157 pounds, allowed some breathing room for the Pioneers, but a win by
Tyrell Newmann started a string of five wins from 165 through 285, including a pair of pins at 174 and 285.
Against the Red Dragons, Cortland took the matches at 125 and 133 pounds, but
Matt Castillo (Port Washington, N.Y.) pinned his opponent at 141, jump-starting the Hawks to eight straight wins, with six of the wins coming by way of pin.
Matt Lucas (Danbury, Conn.),
Jayden Curley (Mansfield, Mass.),
Michael Forte (Westbury, N.Y.),
Spencer Fetrow (Holliston, Mass.), and
Jayden Toppan each earned pins.
To close the day, Jack Napeloni took a victory over
Maceo Eramo at 133 pounds, before Tylor Stubbs earned a win over
Shaun McLaughlin. The Hawks first win came at 174 pounds, when Curley took a 8-2 win by decision over Sean Tansey.
Forte then picked up a win by pin over Zach Borzio, before Fetrow closed out scoring for Roger Williams with a 20-6 win by Major Decision.
Roger Williams (2-1, 1-0 NEWA) will return to action on Saturday, Nov. 23 at the WPI Duals. The Hawks are set to wrestle against Norwich, Maine Maritime, and American International.
