WORCESTER, Mass. – The Roger Williams University Wrestling team defeated American International College, 31-19, before coming back, with five straight match wins against Norwich, 30-21, at the WPI Duals.
Against AIC, the Hawks fell at 125, with Jack Sullivan pinning his opponent. The Hawks dropped three points at 133, as Joseph Aldrich defeated
Trey Kaupp, 11-7. Roger Williams scored their first points of the match at 141 pounds, with
Matthew Castillo (Port Washington, N.Y.) defeating Aaron Morocho 11-1, for four points.
The Yellow Jackets responded with a win at 149 pounds, before wins by
Gordon Murray and
Matt Lucas (Danbury, Conn.) each earned wins to give the Hawks a 15-13 advantage, winning by tech fall and major decision. AIC picked up one last win at 174 pounds, with a major decision to take a 19-13 advantage, but the Hawks earned six points in the final three weight classes to take the win.
Against the Cadets, Roger Williams dropped the match at 125 by pin, and the Cadets earned another six points at 133 with Carver Moyer picking up a pin. RWU earned five points, with Castillo winning via tech fall 16-1 in 2:33. Norwich earned another four points to take a 16-5 lead, but a deduction for the Hawks caused the score to move to 16-4.
At 157 pounds, Tyler Russ gave Norwich another five points with a tech fall win 20-1, but the Hawks rallied in the heavier weight classes. With Norwich leading 21-4, Lucas pinned his opponent at 165 pounds, followed by a major decision win by Michael Malfitiano, pulling the Hawks to within seven points. A six-point victory from
Michael Forte (Westbury, Mass.) brought the match to a one point, but
Michael Toppan then pinned Rory Nolan to give the Hawks the first lead of the match, 26-21.
The final match was between
Spencer Fetrow (Holliston, Mass.) and Norwich's Mason Sprinkel, who was ranked fourth in the latest NWCA regional rankings. Fetrow earned the winning points of the match, defeating Sprinkel by Major Decision 12-1 to take the win.
Roger Williams (4-1, 1-1 NEWA) will host a Dual Meet on Saturday, Dec. 7 beginning at 10:00 am at RWU. The Hawks are scheduled to take on NYU and New Jersey City.
