BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Field Hockey team reached the conference title game for the second consecutive season, after defeating No. 3 Western New England, 2-0, in the Conference of New England (CNE) Semifinals.
The Hawks outshot WNE 10-4, with seven of RWU's shots landing on the cage. Both teams were held without a shot in the fourth quarter. WNE led the Hawks in penalty corners 9-5 in the match.
The Golden Bears opened the match maintaining possession for much of the opening quarter, however, the Hawks were able to hold the Golden Bears without a shot in the opening frame.
Heading into the second quarter, Roger Williams finally struck when
Abigail Stevens (Brewster, Mass.) connected with
Chelsea King (Schenectady, N.Y.) for the first goal of the match in the 22
nd minute of action.
Shortly after halftime, King struck again giving Roger Williams a 2-0 lead, with
Maddy Monahan (Bristol, N.H.) finding King, giving the Hawks a 2-0 lead that they would not relinquish.
Jill Haudenshield (stood tall in goal for the Hawks' making a pair of saves on both shots that she faced. WNE's Zoey Wexler saved five shots while allowing a pair of goals in the loss.
With the win, No. 2 Roger Williams (15-6, 4-1 CNE) will host the CNE Championship game against No. 4 University of New England, after the Nor'easters upset, No. 1 Endicott, 3-2.
