Men's Soccer: Penalty Shootout Ends Hawks Season at CNE Championship

BOSTON, MASS- The Roger Williams Men's Soccer team traveled up to East Boston Memorial Park on Saturday to face off against Suffolk in the Conference of New England (CNE) Championship game. The Hawks drew the Rams in regulation time 1-1 and in the end, the Hawks lost the battle to the Rams 3-2 in a penalty shootout.

In the first half of the regular time, the Hawks out-shot the Rams nine to zero. The Hawks also had six corner-kick opportunities in the first half, whereas the Rams had none. The Hawks and Rams battled for possession, each team giving up a number of fouls. Despite the Hawks' plethora of shots, none of the players were able to find the back of the net this half.

At the start of the second half, the Hawks had just four shots compared to the Rams 13 for the half. In the 51st minute, Liam Blaisdell (Plymouth, Mass.) found the back of the net off a beautiful throw ball on the ground by John Fogarty (Scituate, Mass.), gaining a 1-0 lead for the Hawks. Just 25 minutes later, in the 76th minute, the Rams' Brady Sorensen scored an equalizer. Both teams battled for another opportunity to finish the game but neither one could pull it off and the match went into overtime.

In the first half of overtime, both teams only had one goal scoring opportunity, logging one shot each this half and neither finding the point they needed. In the second half of overtime, the Hawks' managed another shot in an attempt to score, during this time the Rams had four opportunities with the Hawks' goalkeeper Eliot Panaccione (Pepperell, Mass.) keeping the Hawks in the game and leaving overtime scoreless.

The teams then moved on to a penalty shootout. The Rams shot second in the shootout and acquired the first goal. The Hawks recovered with an equalizer in the second round of penalties with the Rams missing and making it 1-1. In the third round of penalties, the Rams pulled ahead with a second penalty goal. Both the Hawks and the Rams gained another penalty goal in the fourth round but unfortunately, when it came to round 5, the Rams put away their penalty shot and the Hawks' did not, resulting in a final score of 2-3 in the penalty shoot-out and ending the 2024 season for the Hawks.

The Roger Williams Men's Soccer team ended off their season with an 11-7-4 record overall, having a 4-3-2 record in CNE conference play this season. The Hawks conclude their season with their third straight trip to the conference championship.
