BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University men's lacrosse team dominated Lasell on Saturday afternoon, winning their non-conference matchup, 22-9, on Bayside Field.
The Hawks potted 22 goals on the day with
Kevin Murphy (Ramsey, N.J.) and
Matt Hemmert (Braintree, Mass.) each registering six goals and a pair of assists in the game. Murphy also had three ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers.
Matt Halpin (Hanover, Mass.) had seven points with three goals and four assists on the day.
Defensively,
Kyle Zirn (Chester, N.H.) had three caused turnovers with a pair of ground ball pickups and Murphy and
Tyler Zanini (Hopkinton, Mass.) each had two forced turnovers with three ground balls.
The Hawks offense rolled early with Hemmert tallying the opening three goals of the game, scoring his third goal 5:18 into the contest. Lasell saw goals by Patrick Mulhern and Anthony DeRosa in the opening quarter, but the Hawks struck another three-goal run to take a 6-2 lead with 10:18 remaining in the opening half.
Lasell responded with a goal, but the Hawks saw
Riley Spellman (Manchester, Mass.) and Hemmert each add one to go up, 8-3. Lasell scored one goal with a man-up opportunity with Ryan Stone firing a shot into the back of the cage, but
Eric Brooks (Milford, Mass.) and
Tyler Byrnes (Coventry, R.I.) each scored, before Landon Reyes put one into the cage with four seconds remaining in the half, heading into the break, 10-5.
In the second half, Roger Williams opened by scoring five straight goals, with the first coming off the stick of
Ryan Vendetti (Farmington, Conn.). Lasell rallied for three straight to cut the deficit to seven, but a deep pass from D'Aversa found Halpin for a goal with a second remaining in the third quarter. The Hawks then went on to outscore the Lasers, 6-1 in the final frame.
Roger Williams (2-1, 0-0 CCC) will travel to face MIT on Wednesday, Feb. 28 at 4:00 pm. The Hawks will then host Rivier on Saturday, Mar. 2 at 1:00 pm on Bayside Field.
