Men’s Basketball: Historic Season Comes to a Close in NCAA Tournament

CHESTER, Pa. ­– After a season that saw a number of firsts, the Roger Williams men's basketball team fell to #16 Widener in the program's first ever NCAA Tournament contest, 101-70.
 
Mac Annus (Belmont, Mass.) scored 14 points with three assists, and had a pair of blocks and a steal on the defensive end. Philip Sughrue (Winchester, Mass.) had 12 points with four assists, and five rebounds, shooting an efficient 4-6, going 3-4 from distance. Finn Miller (Stamford, Conn.) had 11 points with four rebounds and three assists on the game, with John Ah Kao (Dumont, N.J.) closing out his collegiate career with eight points.
 
Widener had six players score in double figures, with Steven Matlack tallying 21 on the day, with three rebounds and a pair of assists. Michael Kane had 12 points with eight boards, while Howie Rankine Jr. had a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds.
 
After the Pride opened the contest with Matlack finishing on a layup attempt, Annus did the same on the other side of the floor leveling the contest at 2-2.  Widener then scored nine straight points to take an 11-2 lead with 2:29 into the opening half. The Hawks cut the lead to six but Widener saw Matlack knock down back-to-back threes taking an 19-7 lead.
 
A three by Annus cut into the Pride lead but Widener again went on a run scoring 25 straight points to take command of the contest, with a 49-14 lead. Roger Williams went into the halftime break trailing 54-27.
 
The Hawks continued to battle in the second half, being edged out 47-43 by Widener in the frame, but were unable to overcome the early deficit.
 
Roger Williams (14-15, 8-8 CCC) close their season with their first trip to the NCAA Tournament in program history. The Hawks also won their first CCC title since the 1998-99 season.
