Softball: Hawks Sweep St. Norbert and Salem State

CLERMONT, Fla. – The Roger Williams University softball team defeated Salem State, 3-2, and St. Norbert, 10-1, on Thursday at the Legends Way Ballfields in Florida, completing their second two-win day of the season.

In game one, the Raegen Germano (Old Tappan, N.J.) pitched 5.0 innings, with no earned runs allowed, giving up two runs with four walks, and three strikeouts. Skye Merrow (Hudson, N.H.) picked up the win going 2.0 innings in relief, while holding the Viking offense scoreless, with one walk and three strikeouts.

On the offensive end of the game, Shannon Starratt (Lake George, N.Y.) hit a double, and scored a run. Christina Denovellis (Rocky Hill, Conn.) and Kelsey Burr (Warwick, Conn.) each picked up a hit in the contest, with Burr bringing in two runs. Jamie Wells (Castle Rock, Colo.) also earned an RBI, with four runners stealing a base in the contest.

The contest was scoreless until the bottom of the fourth inning, when Denovellis hit a single into left field. Both runners were safe after an error by second, but with Denovellis running to third, the throw from first to third, was dropped allowing Denovellis to score, placing Wells at second. After a grounder by Nicolette Fraser (Swampscott, Mass.) allowed Wells to advance to third, Burr then hit a ball through the left side to allow Wells to come across as the Hawks took a 2-0 lead.

Salem State responded in the top of the fifth inning with runners on second and third, a past ball brought one in. Samantha Gaona then hit a single up the middle for an RBI leveling the score at 2-2.

In the bottom of the sixth inning the Hawks scored the game winner with Burr hitting into a fielder's choice to bring in Starratt from third base with the bases loaded for the win.

Against St. Norbert, Starratt went 3-for-4 at the plate with a double and a triple in the contest, coming across to score three times. Wells tallied a pair of hits with three RBIs in the contest, while Natalie Lundari (Flemington, N.J.) and Kiera Quadros (East Providence, R.I.) combined for five strikeouts with eight hits in the contest.

After a walk drew the bases loaded, the Hawks scored the first run of the game as Hailey Williams (Vernon, Conn.) came in to score after a pitch by went high for a wild pitch.  The Hawks then loaded the bases again before Taylor Howell (Sandwich, Mass.) hit a single through the right side for an RBI, Wells then singled through to the left, with two runners coming in to score, putting the Hawks up 4-0.

In the top of the second the Hawks added a pair after Denovellis hit a single, bringing in Starratt and Williams after a throwing error by third base.

The two teams remained scoreless until St. Norbert added a run in the bottom half of the fourth inning, with a RBI single down the left field line, for Lundari's lone run of the outing. Roger Williams added two runs in the top of the fifth with a sacrifice fly and Burr single through the right side, and tacked on two more in the top of the seventh to close out the game.

Roger Williams (5-3, 0-0 CCC) will face off against Plymouth State on Friday, Mar. 15 at 9:00 am before facing Lake Forest at 11:15 am to close out their trip to Florida.
