Men’s Lacrosse: Hawks Dominate on Both Ends in Victory Over Anna Maria

BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University men's lacrosse team defeated Anna Maria on Thursday afternoon in a rainy contest on Bayside Field, that saw the Hawks post their largest margin of victory since Apr. 3, 2010 against Regis.
 
In that contest the Hawks downed the Pride, 24-0. The Hawks took 46 shots in the game to the AMCATS 30 attempts, while also leading the clear battle, completing 91.7 percent of their attempts while holding Anna Maria to 80 percent. Roger Williams also won the ground ball battle, 53-29, but fell in faceoffs 17-15.
 
The Hawks had 14 separate goal scorers in the contest, with Matt Hemmert (Braintree, Mass.) leading the way with five goals and an assist. Matt Halpin (Hanover, Mass.) had five points with two goals and three goals, scoring on both shot attempts. Ryan Vendetti (Farmington, Conn.) and Matt Craig (Tiverton, R.I.) each had four points, with Craig scoring three goals and an assist, while Vendetti had a pair of each.
 
On the defensive end, five players had a pair of caused turnovers, with Kyle Zirn (Chester, N.H.), Tyler Zanini (Hopkinton, Mass.), Brian Cumming (East Williston, N.Y.), Matthew Araneo (Merrick, N.Y.), and Chase Zaccagni (Waterbury, Conn.) each recording two. Mike Intravia (Weymouth, Mass.) led with five ground balls, with Zanini following with four ground balls int eh contest. David Rizzo (Methuen, Mass.) won a majority of his faceoffs, going 6-of-11.
 
After Anna Maria turned the ball over, the Hawks went on transition, with Kevin Murphy (Ramsey, N.J.) scoring the first goal for the Hawks, 3:02 into the game. Hemmert added a goal just over 50 seconds later for the Hawks as Roger Williams scored 10 goals in the first quarter, while holding the AMCATS scoreless.
 
In the second quarter the Hawks capped off their run with their 11th goal of the game, scored by Matt Kennedy (Cumberland, Maine). Anna Maria tallied a pair of goals by Hank Gittines and Aiden Foster, but Roger Williams quickly responded with a pair of goals of their own to regain their 11-point advantage. Roger Williams rounded out the quarter, after a goal by Anna Maria's Liam Bedenkop, with goals by Carter Shelton (Castle Rock, Colo.) and Noah Ravas (Baldwinsville, N.Y.), to lead 15-3 at the break.
 
Roger Williams added 10 goals in the second half while holding the AMCATS scoreless in the final 30 minutes of play for the win.
 
"It was great to reward the guys on roster that have been working extremely hard the last couple of weeks," spoke Head Coach Kevin Gould. "Jack Longdon (Putnam Valley, N.Y.) and (Matt) Craig did a great job on the offensive end. We have to recover and reset quickly for a great test on Saturday against Wheaton.
 
Roger Williams (4-2, 0-0 CCC) will host Wheaton on Saturday, Mar. 9 at 1:00 pm on Bayside Field.  The Hawks will then travel to the University of Delaware to face off against Kean on Wednesday, Mar. 13 at 12:00 pm.
