BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University men's lacrosse team defeated Nichols, 7-4, on Tuesday evening in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) play on Bayside Field.
Kevin Murphy scored three goals with five shots on goal, while
Matt Halpin,
Brian Gazard, and
Riley Spellman each had two points, with
Matt Hemmert and
AJ DaRin earning a point each.
Tyler Zanini led the way with five caused turnovers and five ground balls with
Mike Intravaia adding two caused turnovers.
Aaron D'Aversa had 12 saves, while allowing four goals in the contest.
Murphy opened the game for Roger Williams with a goal off a pass from Halpin, 3:33 into the contest. Dylan DeRubeis knotted the game at one for the Bison, before Spellman put a shot past Brady Morgan. But Shea Ullo leveled the game again with a goal with 7:48 remaining in the first quarter. Murphy then added two more goals for the Hawks, taking a 4-2 lead with 2:29 remaining in the first quarter.
The defenses then stood tall throughout the rest of the game, as Nichols scored a goal with 7:36 remaining in the opening half, with Conor Doherty striking for the Bison. Hemmert then answered with a man up opportunity, but Nichols got one back to head into half trailing by one.
The Hawks came out in the second half with Gazard scoring 6:07 into the second half taking a 6-4 lead. The two teams remained scoreless until Spellman scored again with a man-up opportunity with 33 seconds remaining.
Roger Williams (12-4, 5-2 CCC) will face Hartford on Saturday, Apr. 20 at 12:00 pm before finding out their CCC Tournament opponents when the draw is announced.
