Bristol, R.I. – The Roger Williams University softball team swept a Sunday afternoon doubleheader against Gordon. The Hawks won the first game 10-0 in six innings, and the second game 8-3. Both games were played at Gordon College.
In game one, Raegan Germano (Old Tappan, N.J.) got the start. Germano pitched the entire six inning game, allowing only two hits and zero runs. Germano also struck out five batters.
On offense, Christina Denovellis (Rocky Hill, Conn.) led the Hawks with three hits along with an RBI and two runs scored. Hailey Williams (Vernon, Conn.), Taylor Howell (Sandwich, Mass.), Jamie Wells (Castle Rock, Colo.), and Cece Baptista (Central Falls, R.I.) each had two hits and one RBI in game one.
The Hawks' offense began the scoring in the first inning. Denovellis reached base on an error, allowing one run to score. The Hawks scored three more runs in the second inning. Ava Mendence (East Providence, R.I.) brought one run home on a single to left field. Williams and Kayleigh O'Conner (Southington, Conn.) also had RBIs in the inning, both coming on sacrifice plays.
Roger Williams added to their lead in the fifth inning. Singles by Wells and Baptista both recorded an RBI, giving RWU a 6-0 lead. In the sixth inning, Howell and Denovellis both recorded RBI singles. The Hawks added two more runs off an error on a flyball hit by Baptista, bringing to score to 10-0.
In the second game, Keira Quadros (East Providence, R.I.) started for the Hawks. In five innings, Quadros allowed three runs on five hits, while striking out four batters. Natalie Lundari (Flemington, N.J.) came in for relief, pitching two scoreless innings while allowing only one hit.
On offense in game two, Caroline Thomas (Cranston, R.I.) led the Hawks. Thomas went 4-4, recording two RBIs and two runs scored. Williams, Baptista, Howell, and Casey Uryga (Berlin, Conn.) each recorded multi-hit games as well.
Roger Williams began the scoring in game two in the second inning. Thomas knocked in the first run of the game on a single to right field. Uryga and O'Conner also had RBI singles in the inning, giving the Hawks a 3-0 lead. Roger Williams added another run in the fourth inning on a double by Williams. Thomas came in to score, but Uryga was thrown at home on the play.
Gordon scored their first runs of the day later in the fourth inning. The Fighting Scots scored first on an error by the Hawks' pitcher, and added a second run on a wild pitch. The Hawks added another run in the fifth inning on a Thomas RBI single. However, Gordon responded later that inning with a run of their own, making the score 5-3.
In te sixth inning, Roger Williams began to pull away. The Hawks scored two runs on a single by Howell, who was thrown out trying to take second base. In the seventh, RWU added another insurance run on an RBI double from Thomas.
Roger Williams (18-14, 8-6 CCC) will return home on Tuesday, Apr. 30 for a doubleheader against Eastern Nazarene, starting at 3:00 pm.
