BRISTOL, R.I. - The Roger Williams University men's lacrosse team secured a convincing 19-9 victory over Gordon College on Saturday afternoon at Bayside Field in on Senior Day in a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) contest. The win extends Hawks win streak to nine.
Before the game the Hawks recognized 12 seniors on the roster in a pregame ceremony. The Hawks were led offensively by Matt Halpin (Hanover, Mass.) who tallied five points with a goal and four assists, along with Riley Spellman (Manchester, N.H.) who scored four goals with a helper. Matt Hemmert (Braintree, Mass.) tallied a pair of goals and two assists, while Ryan Vendetti (Farmington, Conn.) added four goals.
On the defensive end, the Hawks had four caused turnovers by both Kyle Zirn (Chester, N.H.) and Tyler Zanini (Hopkinton, Mass.) with Eric Brooks (Milford, Mass.), Mike Intravia (Weymouth, Mass.), Matthew Araneo (Merrick, N.Y.), and Eric Izzo (Northford, Conn.) each recording one in the matchup. Aaron D'Aversa (Sea Cliff, N.Y.) made eight saves in the contest.
After Gordon scored the opening two goals of the game, the Hawks went on a run, scoring eight straight to close out the first period with an 8-0 lead. In the second quarter, the Fighting Scots' Jackson Wright put up a tally, but Roger Williams again responded by scoring three straight to end the half with a 11-3 lead.
The Hawks held an 8-6 edge in the second half, as they closed out the contest securing the victory. Roger Williams was able to take advantage of extra-man opportunities, going 2-for-3 in the category, while holding their opponents to 1-for-6.
Roger Williams (11-2, 4-0 CCC) will be on the road to take on Western New England on Tuesday, Apr. 9 at 7:00 pm. The Hawks will then take on Endicott on Saturday, Apr. 13 at 3:00 pm.
