eiBEVERLY, Mass. – The Roger Williams University softball team dropped the final game of the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Tournament on Sunday afternoon, 9-3, at the Endicott Softball Complex.
Keira Quadros (East Providence, R.I.) took the loss for the Hawks pitching 5.0 innings, allowing 6 hits, with two strikeouts and three earned runs.
Raegen Germano (Old Tappan, N.J.) gave up five runs, three earned with two walks and a pair of strikeouts.
Ava Blanchard earned the win for Western New England, going 6.1 innings in relief allowing only one hit with five strikeouts. Evelyn Picone gave up three runs off four hits with three earned and a walk.
Kailey Carrano had three RBIs with a pair of hits, while Kaleigh Blades had two hits with one RBI. Shea McDaniel had a hit with an RBI in the game. Taylor Keegan also had three hits.
Taylor Howell (Sandwich, Mass.) had two hits for Roger Williams with an RBI, while
Ava Mendence (East Providence, R.I.) chipped in a hit and two RBIs.
Christina Denovellis (Rocky Hill, Conn.) and
Jamie Wells (Castle Rock, Colo.) each added a hit.
Western New England opened the game with a base hit to left center field by Taylor Keegan. Gracie Hemstock then hit a ball to left field, that got by O'Connor on an error, and allowed Keegan to score. Kailey Carrano then hit a ball over the head of O'Connor in left that got to the warning track, and put the Golden Bears up 2-0 in the first inning. With two outs and a runner on second, a ball traveled through the legs of the Hawks shortstop, allowing Carrano to come around to score.
In the bottom of the third, the Hawks responded. After a leadoff walk by Williams, The Hawks recorded two straight outs, then Howell came up with a single down the left field line to bring in Williams. The Hawks loaded the bases by singles by Denovellis and Wells, before Mendence hit a single to left center field, bringing in two to level the score at 3-3.
Quadros pitched 3.2 scoreless innings, before Carrano hit a shot down the left field line, staying fair for a two-run home run. In the top of the sixth inning, Kaleigh Blades hit a shot to left field extending the Golden Bear lead to three.
In the top of the seventh, the Golden Bears struck again, when Alex Ferriouolo hit a double to left field. The ball bounced off the wall before Starratt threw a ball past the catcher, allowing a run to score. Shay McDaniel then hit a ball through the middle, pushing the Golden Bear lead to 8-3. The Golden Bears added one run to board to round out the contest.
Roger Williams finishes their season after posting a 23-17 record, with a 9-7 record in CCC play.
