BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University women's tennis team defeated the University of Saint Joseph, 6-1, in a non-conference match on the RWU Tennis Courts.
In doubles action, the Hawks took two matches out of the three to earn the doubles point.
Gracie McCarthy (Marion, Mass.) and
Gabrielle Petroniro (Wolcott, Conn.) took their No. 3 doubles match, 6-1, over
Kate Hardy and Nina Gardella. The Hawks clinched the point at No. 1 doubles earning a 6-1 win from
Izzy Pecora (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) and
Gianna Ferraro (Westerly, R.I.). Liliana Garcia and Shelly Sirisavath took a tight No. 3 doubles win 7-5 over
Ella Mancini (Middlebury, Conn.) and
Adriana Palmieri (Southington, Conn.).
Petroniro took the first point in the singles portion of play, 6-3, 6-1, before Ferraro took a 6-1, 6-3 victory to move within a point of clinching the match. The clinching point was awarded to Mancini who defeated Garcia, 6-2, 6-0.
Palmieri added another point with a 6-3, 6-3 win over her opponent at No. 5 singles, while
Valentina Abarca (Riobamba, Ecuador) earned a 6-2, 4-6, 12-10 win at No. 3 singles, before Maddie Rossetti earned the lone point for the Blue Jays at No. 2 singles.
Roger Williams (4-1, 0-0 CNE) will take part in the Newport Grass Court Tournament on Thursday, Sept. 12 at 12:00 pm. The Hawks will then host Clark on Saturday, Sept. 14 at 12:00 pm, before hosting Nichols for their first Conference of New England (CNE) match on Tuesday, Sept. 17.
