HARTFORD, CONN. – The Roger Williams men's basketball defeated Hartford University 77-63 at Chase Arena in West Hartford, Conn. on Wednesday evening. The win pushes the Hawks to 11-5 overall and 6-3 in conference action.
On top of the win, it was a historic night for Graduate Student
Mac Annus (Belmont, Mass.), who passed Brian Fleming to become the all-time leader in three-point field goals in Roger Williams school history. It took Annus just 94 games to reach the 222 three-point field goal mark, taking place over the course of about three and a half seasons. Annus has shot 42% for his career from three-point distance, and currently holds a career-best 47% mark this season.
Diving into the matchup, the Hawks were able to jump out to a 16-3 lead, due in part to four three point makes spread between
Ryan Higgins and
Mac Annus, just five minutes into the game. The men would continue to hold a double-digit lead over the opponent until the one-minute mark, when a Jaylen Brown three pointer pulled Hartford to within nine points of the Hawks. Two free throws by
Mac Annus would send the Hawks to the locker room with a nine-point lead.
Out of the half, Hartford would narrow the deficit even further, this time to four points, before another
Ryan Higgins three pointer brought the lead back to seven. Both teams would continue to trade baskets, until the 12-minute mark when a Joshua Petion layup brought the opponent to within just six. It was
Ryan Higgins who would respond once again with a jumper, followed by a
Ryan Hammarlund steal and
Ty Higgins jumper, bringing the lead back to double digits. The Hawks would go on to coast with their double-digit lead for the final 10 minutes, securing the 77-63 win.
Individually, Annus once again led the Hawks in scoring in addition to his historic night, piling in 21 points to go along with four rebounds. First year
Ryan Higgins (Boston, Mass.) would add 13 points of his own.
Finn Miller (Stamford, Conn.) led the unit on the glass, ripping down a team-high seven rebounds. For Hartford, Joshua Petion led the way with 21 points.
Roger Williams (11-5, 6-3 CNE) will travel back home to take on Nichols where they look to avenge their early season road loss to the Bison. The matchup will take place on Saturday, Jan. 25 at 3:00 PM.
