BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Women's Tennis team defeated Endicott 4-3 in a thriller that came down to the final match on Tuesday evening at the RWU Tennis Courts, in a Conference of New England (CNE) match.
In doubles play, Adriana Palmieri (Southington, Conn.) and Gabrielle Petroniro (Wolcott, Conn.) earned a 6-1 victory over at No. 3 doubles over Samantha Hartmann and Amber Woods. No. 2 doubles saw the Gulls take a 6-3 win when Caroline Sutliffe and Emily Leclerc over the Hawks' Izzy Pecora (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) and Ella Mancini (Middlebury, Conn.). Megan Bache (Westbrook, Conn.) and Valentina Abarca (Riobamba, Ecuador) were then able to take a 6-4 match at No. 1 doubles, earning the point for the Hawks with their win over Nadia Uzelac and Jillian Friedman.
In singles, Petronio earned a 6-2, 6-3 win at the No. 6 spot over Abbey Fleming, ahead of a No. 3 response by Sutlieffe defeating Mancini at the No. 3 spot with a 6-3, 6-3 win. Endicott then leveled the match as Bache fell, 6-4, 6-2 at No. 4 singles to Nadia Uzelac, ahead of Leclerc winning a 6-4, 6-3 win over Abarca to give Endicott the lead.
Trailing, Palmieri then leveled the match, tallying a 6-2, 6-2 win over Milana Montini ahead of a match that went three sets, which saw Pecora come from behind to win the No. 2 singles match, 5-7, 6-4, 6-2 over Friedman.
Roger Williams (11-0, 6-0 CNE) will host the University of Saint Joseph on Thursday, Oct. 16 at 4:00 pm. The Hawks will then travel to face Gordon on Saturday, Oct. 18 at 1:00 pm in Wenham.
