BRISTOL, R.I. — Brandon Rodriguez (Norwalk, Conn.) buried a second-half penalty kick to lift Roger Williams University to a 1-0 win over Wentworth on Tuesday night at Bayside Field, securing the Hawks the No. 1 seed in the upcoming Conference of New England (CNE) Tournament.
Rodriguez converted from the spot in the 73rd minute after a foul in the box, breaking through a resilient defensive effort by Wentworth goalkeeper Isaac Chambass, who recorded 13 saves on 14 shots on goal.
The Hawks dominated throughout, outshooting the Leopards 28–3, placing 15 shots on target and earning eight corner kicks to Wentworth's two. Max Patenaude (Pepperell, Mass.) and Liam Blaisdell (Plymouth, Mass.) were constant attacking threats, combining for seven of RWU's 15 shots on target.
Roger Williams goalkeeper Eliot Panaccione (Pepperell, Mass.) did not face a shot on goal, earning his eighth clean sheet of the season, pushign his record to 10-1-4.
With the victory, Roger Williams improved to 13-1-4 overall and 8-1-1 in conference play, clinching the top seed entering postseason play. Wentworth wrapped up its season at 6-12-2 and 2-8 in league competition.
