WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – The Roger Williams Wrestling team finished ninth overall at the Ned McGinley Invitational hosted by King's on Saturday.
The Hawks tallied 77 points, finishing behind King's, US Merchant Marine Academy, and Cortland. The Hawks saw Jayden Toppan (Gloucester, Mass.) and Tommy Iasiello (White Plains, N.Y.) finish fourth at 285-pounds and 157-pounds respectively. Jack Forte (Westbury, N.Y.) placed fifth at 157-pounds.
Toppan opened his day with a win over Christopher Farrant, by tech fall, 19-4. Toppan then earned his second win of the season over Luke Abilio also by tech fall, 20-5. Toppan then earned his next two wins by decision against Ben Rosa, 2-1, and Derek Martin, 3-0, but eventually fell to Nathan Faxon 9-4.
At 157 pounds, Iasiello earned the first-round bye before defeating Stav Fronimos by tech fall, 17-2. Iasiello won his next match by fall in 0:31. He then lost by decision in the semi-final against Mj Turi, 4-2, before losing again by major decision against Marc Kleyman, 11-2.
Also, at 157-pounds, Forte won his match of the day by decision, 13-7, against Austin Smith of Wilkes. He then earned the bye before defeating Andrew O'Reilly by major decision, 12-3. Forte won his next match by medical forfeit before facing Robert Leeds and defeating him by major decision 15-3. Forte then moved on to face Frank Gulli of York College and defeated him by decision 5-2, before earning a no contest win against against Logan Weaver. He finished his day with a win by decision against Rec Jacops, 9-2.
Roger Williams will be back in action on Saturday, Nov. 8 at 9:00 am at the RWU Invitational. The Hawks will then travel to Williams for their first Dual Meet of the season on Saturday, Nov. 15.
