Men’s Soccer: Hawks Fall to Beacons, 4-1, in NCAA First Round

BRUNSWICK, Maine – The Roger Williams University Men's Soccer team saw their season come to a close as they were defeated by UMass Boston, 4-1, in the First Round of the NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Tournament held at Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine.

The Beacons outshot the Hawks 24-17, with 12 on goal to the Hawks 10. The Hawks held the advantage on corner kicks 2-1. The game was a physical battle with the Hawks tallying 19 fouls and UMass Boston being called for 18. The Hawks were awarded four yellow cards and one red card, while the Beacons had one yellow.

The Beacons and Hawks set the tone early, with Roger called for a pair of fouls and UMass called for one in the first 10 minutes. Despite an early corner, the Hawks could not convert. UMass Boston scored first as Eduardo Chirico took the penalty kick goal in the 18th minute. Within six minutes later, the Beacons scored again as Ryan Doherty found a pass from John Arruda, putting the Beacons up 2-0. With 10 minutes left in the first half, the Hawks drew a corner before Murphy Malone (Cheshire, Conn.) sent a ball in to Dylan Robbins (Johnston, R.I.) scored a header goal, to bring the score to 2-1.

In the opening minutes of the second half and after a shot by the Beacons' Eduardo Chirico, Hawks' keeper Eliot Panaccione (Pepperell, Mass.) was given a red card after colliding with a Beacons play while making a play on the ball. TJ Machowski (Marlborough, Conn.) entered the game in the 49th minute in goal for the Hawks, as the awarded Beacons' penalty kick was blocked before another shot went wide. The Beacons controlled the pace as they scored in the 55th minute as Ryan Doherty found Felipe De Andrade, to lengthen their lead to 3-1. The last goal of the half was scored by John Arruda in the 82nd minute. After a flurry of substitutions and shots, the Beacons won the game, 4-1, and advance to play Bowdoin on Sunday afternoon.

Roger Williams (13-2-6, 8-1-1 CNE) concludes their season with their second NCAA Tournament appearance and CNE Championship in the last four years.
