BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Wrestling team finished third overall at the RWU Invitational, hosted in the Campus Rec Center on Saturday.
The Hawks compiled 111 points, finishing behind Coast Guard with 188.5 and defending National Champions Johnson & Wales with 180.5. Wesleyan finished fourth with 104.
The Hawks' top finisher was Joshua Nieroda, who placed second at 184 pounds. Nieroda went on to take his first three matches, winning two of the three by pin, including a semifinal win over Zachary Miller of Johnson & Wales. Nieroda then battled for 6:57 before succumbing to a pin in the finals.
At 174 pounds, Tyrell Newmann battled through a day in which he posted a 5-1 record to finish third overall. He opened with a 2-1 record going 3-0 through the rest of the day, winning three straight matches by decision on his way to a third place win. Anton Puhach finished in sixth, winning his first three bouts, before falling in bout four 7-5 by decision and falling in medical forfeit in the bout for fifth.
At 157 pounds, Jack Forte finished his day in third at 157 pounds, earning a 5-1 record to finish third with a win by tech fall and two wins by major decision. At 125 pounds, Spencer Buscema finished fourth while Jayden Toppan did the same at the 285 pound slot.
Caden Bruseo and Matthew Gish each did the same at 133 pounds and 165 pounds respectively.
Roger Williams returns to competition on Saturday, Nov. 15 at Williams for their first Dual competitions of the season, at Williams, against Utica, Bridgeport, and the host Ephs.
