PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Men's Basketball team was able to use a late 18-4 run to take a commanding lead into the halftime break on their way to a 99-70 victory over Johnson & Wales on Tuesday in Conference of New England (CNE) action.
The Hawks hit 58.3 percent of their shots from the floor, pulling down 45 boards to the Wildcats' 33, while holding JWU to 39.4 percent from the floor. The Hawks also outshot the Wildcats, 44-4 percent to 14.3 percent from three-point range.
Ryan Hammarlund (Southington, Conn.) led the squad with 22 points on 10-for-13 shooting from the floor with eight rebounds, three assists, and two steals.
Finn Miller (Stamford, Conn.) finished a rebound shy of a double-double, scoring 17 points, with nine boards, and four assists, with
Ryan Higgins (Boston, Mass.) also adding 17 points with 5-for-7 shooting, knocking down three of his four attempts from long range.
Ty Higgins (New Marlborough, Mass.) also scored in double figures with 11 points.
For the Wildcats, Colin Rice shot 8-for13 from the floor with 11 rebounds for 19 points, while collecting a steal. Alvin Baez had 17 points in the game, knocking down six shots from the floor to pair with five free throws, with four steals for a game-high.
With the game sitting at 35-29 with 4:38 remaining,
Ryan Higgins hit a pair of free throws to spark an 18-4 run to end the first half, Hammerlund stealing the ball from Azariah Harrison, and finishing with a layup on the other end. The Hawks were able to outscore JWU, 48-37 in the final 20 minutes to finish the contest.
Johnson & Wales (1-7, 0-2 CNE) will host Regis on Thursday, Dec. 4 at 7:00 pm, before taking on CNE foe Nichols in Dudley, Mass. On Saturday, Dec. 6.
Roger Williams (4-4, 2-0 CNE) will host the University of New England on Saturday, Dec. 6 at 3:00 pm before taking on Fitchburg State on Wednesday, Dec. 10 at 6:00 pm.
