CLERMONT, Fla. – Behind a strong performance in the circle from
Kiera Quadros and a balanced offensive effort, the Roger Williams University Softball team secured a 6-4 victory over Lake Forest on Thursday afternoon at Hancock Park.
Quadros (2-1) delivered a complete-game effort, allowing four runs on seven hits while striking out seven and walking none over seven innings, with two home runs allowed.
At the plate,
Hailey Williams led the charge for the Hawks, going 3-for-4 with two RBIs, including a crucial two-run single in the second inning.
Shannon Starratt also contributed with a pair of hits, while
Vianna Chamberlin added a late insurance run in the seventh after reaching on a single and advancing on an error.
Lake Forest (3-3) battled back with strong performances at the plate, led by Emmie Nyen, who went 2-for-4 with a triple and two runs scored. Lia Taglia added a solo home run in the second, while Kyla Chevalier launched a solo shot of her own in the seventh to keep the Foresters within striking distance. Kelly Collins also chipped in an RBI single.
Roger Williams opened the scoring in the first when Williams doubled and later came home on a passed ball. The Hawks extended their lead in the second on Williams' two-run single. Lake Forest hit a home run over the left field wall, but the Hawks tacked on two more in the third after capitalizing on Lake Forest's defensive miscues.
In the bottom of the third with Nyen standing on second, Collins hit a ball to right center, scoring Nyen from second. The Foresters added a run in the bottom of the fifth with Dempsey hitting a sacrifice fly to left field bringing in a run.
In the top of the seventh, Chamberlin's single brought in a run, but Chevalier homered in the bottom of the seventh to lead off the inning. Quadros responded with a strikeout, before a liner to short, and ground out at Quadros ended the game.
On the mound, Kayla Collins (0-1) took the loss for Lake Forest, allowing five runs, three earned, on five hits over three innings. Vivian Buske provided four innings of relief, limiting Roger Williams to just one unearned run on four hits.
Roger Williams (3-5, 0-0 CNE) will take on Marywood at 9:00 AM on Friday, Mar. 14, before rounding out Spring Break at 11:15 am against Husson.
