Baseball: Suffolk Gets by Hawks in CNE Opener

Bristol, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Baseball team fell to Suffolk on Saturday afternoon, 6-4, in their opening game of their Conference of New England (CNE) slate at Paolino Field on Friday afternoon. A strong pitching performance and late-game offensive surge propelled the Rams (6-9, 1-0 CNE) past the Hawks.

Suffolk's Chris Cimino went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored, while Alex Sorenti-Burns added a 2-for-4 performance with an RBI and a run. Sam Armbruster contributed a key 1-for-3 outing with two RBIs. On the mound, Pierce Salbego earned the win, pitching seven innings while allowing seven hits and four runs, three earned, striking out three. Jack Raimo closed the game with a perfect ninth inning to secure the save.

Roger Williams was led by Will Florio, who went 2-for-4 with a home run, an RBI, and a run scored. Ty Cali also had a strong performance, going 2-for-4 with a triple, an RBI, and a run. Sam Weigel added an RBI. Starting pitcher Lucas Lariviere gave the Hawks six strong innings, allowing four hits and three runs while striking out two. Nick Gleason took the loss after allowing two runs in one inning of relief.

Suffolk struck first with a two-run opening frame as Cimino and Sorenti-Burns delivered RBI singles. Roger Williams responded in the bottom of the second with a solo home run from Florio, cutting the deficit to 2-1. The Hawks tied the game at 2-2 in the third when Owen Hibbard scored on a fielding error. Roger Williams took the lead in the fourth as Cali's RBI triple drove in Nick Sheehan, making it 3-2.

Suffolk knotted the score at 3-3 in the sixth after a sacrifice fly from Armbruste brought home Max Iorio. Roger Williams regained the lead, 4-3, in the seventh after Weigel's RBI single plated Cali. The Rams took control in the top of the eighth, scoring twice. A groundout from Martin brought home Cimino, followed by Armbruster's RBI single to give Suffolk a 5-4 advantage. Suffolk added an insurance run in the ninth after an error allowed Hilliard to score. Raimo shut the door in the bottom half to secure the win.

Suffolk and Roger Williams will face off in game two at approximately 3:15 pm.
