Baseball: Hawks Down #20/29 Babson in Key Non-Conference Win

BRISTOL, R.I. – In a non-conference matchup, the Roger Williams University Baseball team defeated #20/29 Babson on Thursday afternoon at Paolino Field, 9-8.
 
On the mound Evan Beattie took the win, tossing 1.2 innings of scoreless ball, while striking out one with a pair of walks, facing 10 batters. Ryan Camp took his first save of the season, tossing the ninth inning, coming in for relief while only allowing a walk, and picking up all three outs. Vinnie Purpura had the loss, giving up three earned runs with six runs total off five hits.
 
For Roger Williams, Sam Weigel went 2-for-4 with three runs and a walk, while Owen Hibbard went 1-for-4 with two RBIs. Will Florio also had a pair of RBIs with a hit in the matchup. Babson saw Ryan Liss go yard, hitting a three-run home run in the eighth inning while bringing in four RBIs. Ryan Hvozdovic also had 4 RBIs in the game, going 1-for-5.
 
Babson took the early lead, scoring three runs in the top half of the third inning as Hvozdovic. Hit a single to left center, driving in a pair, before Liss hit a single to left field to bring in another run. The Hawks answered with two in the bottom half of the inning as Braden Ventura and Folan each brought in a run. Babson scored in the top of the fourth with a bases-loaded walk by Hvozdovic, but the Hawks erupted for six runs in the bottom half of the inning, capped with Ventura reaching on an error and two runs coming across.
 
In the top of the sixth Nick Sheehan hit a sac fly in foul territory to left field, but in the top of the eighth, Hvozdovic reached on a fielder's choice, bringing in one, and Liss hit a homer to right field to bring in three runs cutting the Hawks' lead to one.
 
In the top of the ninth, the Beavers put runners on first and second with nobody out when Camp came into the game. Cam walked his first batter, before a fielder's choice got the lead runner at home. A fly out by Liss to shallow right field and a fielder's choice with an out at second ended the contest.
 
Roger Williams (7-9, 1-2 CNE) will continue their Conference of New England (CNE) slate on Saturday, Mar. 29 at Nichols beginning at 12:00 pm for a doubleheader.
