Men's Lacrosse: Roger Williams Falls in Regular Season Finale to Wentworth in Double Overtime

BOSTON – In a matchup to decide the No. 3 and No. 4 seed in the upcoming Conference of New England (CNE) Tournament, the Wentworth Leopards edged out the Roger Williams University Men's Lacrosse team, 11-10, in double overtime in both teams' regular season finale.
 
Brendan Kroll scored five goals and dished out two assists for seven points, with a ground ball. Tyler Longo had five points with a goal and four assists, while Gabe Cobham added three points with a pair of goals and an assist. Five different players had a caused turnover for the Leopards while Connor Charron had nine ground balls and went 19-for-25 in faceoffs.
 
Malcolm Steegstra had four points with a goal and three assists in the matchup, while Eric Brooks tallied a pair of goals and an assist for three points. Jack Kester had three assists, while Brady Lee, Carter Shelton, and Matt Hemmert each had two goals. Kyle Zirn led the way for the Hawks with eight ground balls and three caused turnovers.
 
In cage, Tom Gardner had 12 saves with 10 goals allowed, with Aaron D'Aversa giving up 11 goals with seven saves in the game.
 
Both offenses got off to a hot start, scoring a combined nine goals in the opening frame. Wentworth was the first to strike as Tyler Longo scored on a man-up opportunity following a pushing penalty. The Hawks struck right back, as Lee scored his 16th of the season, off a helper from Steegstra. Drew Bouley and Kroll each tallied a goal to give the Leopards a 3-0 lead with 8:30 remaining in the opening frame.
 
Hemmert scored his 32nd goal of the year to pull the Hawks back within one, but Cobham added a goal to maintain a two-goal lead with 5:13 remaining in the frame. Just over a minute later Shelton was on the receiving end of a pass from Brooks, cutting the deficit to one, but Erik Vogt tallied the fifth goal of the quarter for Wentworth, and Lee tallied a shorthanded goal for the Hawks, heading into the second trailing 5-4.
 
The Hawks leveled the matchup 29 seconds into the second quarter, with Shelton striking for the 15th goal of the season. Kroll scored his second of the game a few minutes later, ahead of a goal by Cobham putting the Leopards up 7-5. Kobi Buffa added a man-down goal to take an 8-5 advantage with 4:56 remaining in the first half. Hemmert tallied a goal with 12 seconds remaining before the break to pull within two.
 
Wentworth extended their lead to three heading into the fourth quarter, outscoring the Hawks 2-1 in the quarter.
 
In the fourth quarter, both teams were scoreless until there were 6:59 remaining in the frame. Matt Kennedy scored his 12th goal of the season, and 43 seconds later, Steegstra scored again to pull within one. With 5:04 remaining in regulation, Steegstra found Brooks to level the score at 10 apiece. Despite opportunities, both teams would head into overtime knotted up.  
 
In the first overtime period, the Hawks had the best opportunity to score, with David Rizzo earning the faceoff win to start the period. Hemmert put the third shot of the sequence on target that Gardiner saved for Wentworth. The Leopards had one shot in the period to the Hawks five.
 
In the second overtime period, the Leopards took the opening faceoff. Following a timeout, Tyler Longo found Kroll 57 seconds into the period, scoring the game-winning goal and securing the No. 3 seed for the Leopards.

Roger Williams (9-8, 5-3 CNE) will await the bracket for the 2025 CNE Tournament.
