Baseball: Hawks Fall to Umass-Boston in Non-Conference Battle

BOSTON, MASS. - In a high-scoring battle at Monan Park on April 3, UMass.-Boston downed Roger Williams, 21-8. Despite jumping out to a 5-1 lead in the second inning, the Hawks were unable to hold off the Beacon lineup that tallied 21 hits and 21 runs over eight innings.

Roger Williams struck first in the second, stringing together five hits including an RBI double from Nick Sheehan and a two-run single by Ethan Keeney. They added two more runs in the fourth thanks to an RBI double by Owen Hibbard and a single from Sam Weigel. Ty Cali's RBI double in the seventh rounded out the scoring for RWU. Weigel led the Hawks with a 3-for-5 effort at the plate, while Will Florio, Sheehan, and Keeney each recorded two hits. In total, RWU racked up 15 hits but left 11 runners on base and struggled to sustain momentum after their early lead.

The turning point came in the bottom of the fourth when UMass.-Boston piled on six runs to erase a 7-2 deficit. Jacob Levine launched a two-run homer, and Elliot Miles added an RBI double as the Beacons took an 8-7 lead. They continued their hot hitting with four runs in both the fifth and sixth innings. Miles finished 4-for-6 with four RBI, three doubles, and two stolen bases, while Justin Gouveia went a perfect 4-for-4 with two RBI and four runs scored. Bostyn Burris contributed four hits, including two doubles, and Breon Parker capped the day with a two-run homer in the sixth and a two-RBI single in the eighth.

On the mound, six different RWU pitchers made an appearance. Starter Conor Quinlan (1-3) took the loss after giving up eight runs in 3.2 innings. For UMB, Hunter Ward (2-1) earned the win, delivering three shutout innings in the middle of the game.

With the loss, Roger Williams drops to 8-13 on the season. In their next matchup, they will travel back home to take on Gordon as a part of a doubleheader on Friday afternoon.
