Baseball: Hawks Fall to Mitchell 4-1 in Non-Conference Battle

BRISTOL, R.I. – The  Roger Williams baseball team fell to Mitchell College on Tuesday afternoon at Paolino Field. Following the non-conference loss, the Hawks record moves to 9-14 on the season.

Both teams were unable to score through five innings despite plenty of hits. Roger Williams broke through in the fifth when Sam Weigel tripled and scored on a Will Florio single, however Mitchell would respond with four unanswered runs over the course of the final three innings to secure the win, 4-1.

Mitchell's pitching staff led the way, as they combined to allow just one earned run on 12 hits while striking out 11 in the process. Ethan Chavez tossed three scoreless innings to start, followed by Jadon Canelli and eventually Jacob Quiles, who earned the win with three shutout frames, striking out five. Chase Donahue picked up the save for Mitchell, his first of the season. For Roger Williams, starter Matthew Donovan pitched seven innings, allowing just two hits and one unearned run while striking out seven. Robert Stock took the loss after surrendering two runs in the eighth.

At the plate, Mitchell was led by Michael Gajda, who went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Braiden Alaimo added an RBI single in the ninth, and Terni Jr. reached base twice, scored a run, and stole a base.

Despite totaling 12 hits, the Hawks failed to cash in, stranding 15 runners in the loss. Florio led the way going 3-for-5 with an RBI, while Weigel went 2-for-5 with a triple and a run scored. Sam Arcieri also added a double, but the Hawks were held scoreless after the fifth inning.

Key innings came in the seventh, eighth, and ninth, where Mitchell scored all four of its runs—two of them unearned. A passed ball and an error helped Mitchell take a 3-1 lead in the eighth, and they tacked on another in the ninth to seal the game.

With the win, Mitchell improves to 16-13 on the season, while Roger Williams drops to 9-14. The Hawks will look to bounce back in their next matchup at Rhode Island College on Thursday. They will then travel to Connecticut over the weekend for a double header at Hartford.
