Baseball: Roger Williams Season Comes to an end in CNE Semi-Finals to Nichols

BEVERLEY, MASS. - The Roger Williams baseball team fell to Nichols College, 9-8 in extra innings in the Conference of New England semi-final. The loss ends their season and puts an end to their playoff run as the bottom seed in the conference tournament.

Matthew Donovan took the loss for the Hawks, allowing four earned runs in 2.1 innings, while Nichols'  starter Nolan Sullivan earned the win with 5 innings of shutout relief, striking out 8 and allowing no hits.

Roger Williams jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the third inning, thanks to an RBI double from Owen Hibbard and a sacrifice fly by Ty Cali. Nichols responded in the bottom of the third with a four run innings that came via a grand slam from Liam Flynn, giving the Bison a 4-2 advantage.

The Hawks kept the pressure on, tying the game at 4-4 in the fourth, and then taking a 6-4 lead in the fifth with RBI knocks from Hibbard and Noah Hester. Nichols answered again in the bottom half with two runs to level it at 6-6.

Both teams exchanged runs in the seventh to make it 7-7. Roger Williams pushed across a run in the top of the ninth to lead 8-7, but Nichols matched them with a run of their own in the bottom half to send it to extras. In the 10th, a walk-off single by Adam Pivacek sealed the win for the Bison.

The Hawks run as the No. 6 seed comes to end at the hands of Nichols, however they were able to secure playoffs wins over Western New England and the University of Hartford, sending both teams home in the process. Nichols will line up against Endicott on Sunday afternoon for the Conference of New England championship, where they will have to defeat the Gulls twice.
