Baseball: Hawks Fall to Western New England, Secure Place in CNE Tournament

BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Baseball team fell to Western New England on Saturday afternoon in game two of their Conference of New England (CNE) doubleheader against the Golden Bears, 6-5, but managed to secure their spot in the CNE Tournament.
 
For Western New England (21-17, 8-7 CNE) Ryan Montini led the charge with a pair of hits, while Jack Loftus and Corey Kilroy each had a hit with two RBIs and a home run. Loftus also drew a walk. John Bova had a hit and an RBI in the contest.
 
Four players recorded two hits for the Hawks, as Ty Cali, Noah Hester, Jack Tubman, and Ethan Keeney accomplished the feat. Keeney had a two-RBI game, while Tubman and Hester each brought a runner in to score.
 
On the mound, Lucas Kamoen took the win, pitching 2.0 innings, while pushing his record to 3-0, while striking out one with two hits and a walk allowed in his appearance. Matt Lauria got the start on the bum for WNE giving up three runs, with seven strikeouts through 5.0 innings of work.
 
Roger Williams saw Jonathan Quinn toss 5.0 innings with seven strikeouts and two hits allowed with three walks, giving up one run. Ryan Camp came on in the ninth, picking up the loss after earning the save in game one.
 
Scoring opened up in the top half of the second inning. With the bases loaded, Bova drew a walk to score the first run of the contest. The Hawks responded in the bottom half of the inning with runners on second and third. Tubman hit a single to right field, bringing in Nick Sheehan. With Dennis Folan sitting on third, Keeney hit a deep fly ball to center field, bringing in Folan on the sacrifice fly to give Roger Williams a 2-1 lead.
 
In the bottom of the fourth inning, the Hawks tacked on another run with Keeney knocking in a single to left field, to bring in Folan who was standing on third, after a hit by Tubman put Folan on third.
 
After a walk opened the seventh, Kilroy came up to the plate with two outs and hit a home run over the right field wall, leveling the score at 3-3. Roger Williams responded in the bottom of the seventh when A wild pitch with runners on the corners brought in Griffin Ruffner. The Hawks tallied another run with Hester hitting a ball to the right side of the infield, as Ty Cali came in to score, giving the Hawks a 5-3 lead.
 
Western New England added a run in the top half of the eighth after a wild pitch allowed Connor Cowern to come across home plate, before Loftus' home run in the top of the ninth put the Golden Bears ahead for good in the top of the ninth.
 
Roger Williams (14-21, 6-10 CNE) closes out the regular season with the loss and will turn their attention to the CNE Tournament. The Hawks, the No. 6 seed, will travel to No. 3 Hartford on Wednesday, May 7 for a 3:00 pm matchup.
