Box Score BRIGHTON, Mass. – The Roger Williams University Women's Tennis team defeated Simmons in their season opener, 6-1, at the Daly Field Athletic Complex.
The Hawks picked up the double's point after the No. 3 doubles team of Adriana Palmieri (Southington, Conn.) and Gabrielle Petroniro (Wolcott, Conn.) earned a decisive 6-0 victory. The Hawks also saw Izzy Pecora (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) and Ella Mancini (Middlebury, Conn.) earn 6-1 doubles win over Amoli Vad and Laura Lowe at No. 2 doubles. Simmons took the top doubles match with a 6-3 Masha Shutts and Emilie Lapointe defeating Valentina Abarca (Riobamba, Ecuador) and Megan Bache (Westbrook, Conn.).
Heading into singles play leading 1-0, Claire Dwyer (Manchester, Maine) picked up her first collegiate victory winning against Grace Pluff, 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 6 spot, ahead of Petroniro's 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 5 to put the Hawks within a point of clinching. The clinching point came at No. 3 singles, where Bache earned a 6-2, 6-0 win over Vad, sealing the match for the Hawks.
At No. 4 singles, Palmieri earned another point, taking the match, 6-1, 6-1, ahead of Lapointe's win at No. 2 singles in a three-set match against Mancini, 6-2, 2-6, 10-4. Pecora closed out the day with a win at No. 1 singles, with a 2-6, 7-6 (2), 10-4 win.
Roger Williams (1-0, 0-0 CNE) will play on Thursday, Sept. 4 at 3:30 pm ahead of hosting Wheaton (Mass.) on Saturday, Sept. 6 at 12:00 pm for their home opener on the RWU Tennis Courts.
