MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – The Roger Williams University Field Hockey team was tied at the half at #13 Wesleyan on Tuesday evening, but was unable to overcome the Cardinals, falling 4-3 at Hicks Field.
The Hawks outshot Wesleyan 17-14, with both teams putting 12 shots on target. The Cardinals were able to earn eight penalty corner opportunities, while RWU only tallied six in the match.
The Cardinals had four separate goal scorers in the matchup against the Hawks, while RWU assisted on all three goals in the match. Chelsea King (Albany, N.Y.) opened the scoring in the third minute of play, off the first shot of the game, as Maddy Monahan (Bristol, N.H.) found King in the scoring area for the goal. Wesleyan responded in the eighth minute of play, with Brook Miner finding Sydney Cameron after a penalty corner, for Cameron's first goal of the season.
In the second quarter, Meera Patel tallied a goal for the Cardinals with Cameron being awarded with the helper. With 5:15 remaining in the opening half, Monahan connected with King again, allowing King to score her ninth goal of the season, leading the team, and her 21st and 22nd points of the season, heading into the halftime break, knotted at 2-2.
Wesleyan struck 1:38 into the second half, as they saw Leila Feldman tally a goal, while holding the Hawks off the scoreboard in the third. In the fourth, the Cardinals tallied another goal with 8:10 remaining in regulation, but the Hawks struck with 3:51 remaining as Grace Rocheleau (West Hartford, Conn.) connected with Hannah Timbrouck (Kingston, N.Y.), who finished off a penalty corner. The Hawks had another shot attempt from Elizabeth Duquette (Pittsford, N.Y.), who's shot was saved by Audrey Pace.
Pace tallied nine saves in the contest for Wesleyan, while the Hawks saw Hannah Brazil (Sandwich, Mass.) make eight.
Roger Williams (4-3, 1-0 CNE) will return to Conference of New England (CNE) action on Saturday, Sept. 20, when they travel to face the University of New England. The Hawks will then have a week away from the field before playing the first of two road contests next weekend, beginning on Saturday, Sept. 27 at Hartford.
