Box Score BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Women's Tennis team defeated Wheaton College in non-conference play on Saturday afternoon, 5-2, on the Roger Williams Tennis Courts.
In doubles action, Maya Brennan and Amelie Robinson joined for a No. 3 win over Adriana Palmieri (Southington, Conn.) and Claire Dwyer (Manchester, M.E.), 6-2. The Lyons secured the doubles point at No. 2, with Asia-Leigh Hollis and Laila Haraj-Sai winning 6-4 over Izzy Pecora (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) and Ella Mancini (Middlebury, Conn.). The No. 1 doubles match was a battle that also went in favor of the Lyons, Kara Greenlee and Alissa Ortiz edged out Valentina Abarca (Riobamba, Ecuador) and Meg Bache (Westbrook, Conn.), 7-6 (10-3).
The Hawks went to work in singles play, tacking on their first point when Palmieri claimed the No. 5 singles match, 6-2, 6-4. Greenlee helped the Lyons secure another point to take a 2-1 advantage after winning the No. 1 singles, 6-4, 6-3. The Hawks responded right back with a three-set win by Bache, 6-3, 1-6, 6-4, leveling the match score to 2-2. Mancini battled to pick up another point with a victory at No. 3 singles, 7-5, 6-3.
The Hawks added another and secured their win as Pecora picked up the No. 2 singles match, 6-3, 7-5. To round out the afternoon, Hawks picked up a hard-earned victory at No. 6 singles, with Gabrielle Petroniro (Wolcott, Conn.) earning a 7-6(10-2), 7-6(10-3) victory to give Roger Williams the match win, 5-2.
Roger Williams (3-0,0-0 CNE) will travel to Clark University on Saturday, Sept. 13, for a 12:00 p.m. match in Worcester, Mass. The Hawks will then open conference play when they host Curry College on the RWU Tennis Courts on Tuesday, Sept. 16, at 4:00 p.m.
