MILTON, Mass. – The Roger Williams Men's Basketball team saw history on Tuesday evening, as the Hawks downed the Colonels of Curry College 108-71, with
Ashton Leclerc (Gorham, Maine) setting a pair of RWU single-game records in the process.
Leclerc, led the Hawks with 43 points and 12 made three pointers in the game, both setting a new school mark in the process. Leclerc went 14-for-15 from the field while knocking down 12-of-13 shots from beyond the arc. Leclerc's night breaks the single-game points mark set by Austin Coene in 2018 with 42, while breaking the record for made threes in a game, which was previously done by Brien Fleming twice, and Jake Heaton once of eight.
Ty Higgins (New Marlborough, Mass.) chipped in 15 points off the bench, shooting 5-of-8 from the floor, all coming from three-point distance, with five rebounds and a steal.
Finn Miller (Stamford, Conn.) led the team on the glass, pulling down nine rebounds, seven on the defensive end, with two steals while dishing out seven assists.
Ryan Hammarlund (Southington, Conn.) tallied three steals, with five Hawks recording at least two.
Curry saw the combination of JD Heneke and Isaiah Andino each score 12 points, while Tommy Malison had 11. Roger Williams out-rebounded the Colonels 40-32, while the Hawks hit 55-7 percent of their shots from the floor, knocking down 20 three-pointers.
The Colonels led 7-6, the Hawks saw Leclerc knock down his first three of the evening, 4:50 into the game, giving the Hawks their first lead of the game. The two teams battled back and forth throughout the opening half, to 12:19 remaining in the second half, when Leclerc and Higgins both hit back-to-back three pointers to take a six-point lead.
The Hawks then broke the game open, as they expanded the lead to a 28-point lead with 1:11 remaining in the opening half. A pair of free throws by Curry's JD Heneke brought Curry to within 26 to end the opening half.
In the second half, the Hawks led by as many as 43 points, as they were able to close out the victory, out scoring the Colonels 51-40 in the second half.
Roger Williams (9-5, 5-0 CNE) will host Nichols on Saturday, Jan. 10 at 3:00 pm, before traveling for a matchup on Wednesday, Jan. 14 at 7:30 pm against Suffolk. The Hawks will then hit the road again on Tuesday, Jan. 20 at 7:30 pm for a matchup at Hartford.
