BRISTOL, R.I. — The Roger Williams University women's tennis team remained undefeated with a 6-1 nonconference victory over Salve Regina University on Thursday afternoon at the RWU Tennis Courts.
The Hawks improved to 9-0 overall while remaining 4-0 in Conference of New England play. Salve Regina fell to 2-4.
Roger Williams won two of the three doubles matches to secure the opening team point. Valentina Abarca (Riobamba, Ecuador) and Iris Gkrekou (Athens, Greece) opened the match with a 6-2 victory at No. 1 doubles.
Ella Mancini (Middlebury, Conn.) and Claire Dwyer (Manchester, Maine) clinched the doubles point with a 6-2 win at No. 3. Salve Regina's Tiffany Gomez and Madigan Murphy defeated Megan Bache (Westbrook, Conn.) and Adriana Palmieri (Southington, Conn.) 7-5 at No. 2 spot.
Abarca earned the first singles point with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Stephanie Davis at the top flight. Gkrekou followed with a 6-2, 2-6, 10-8 win over Kaydin Pinto at No. 2, placing the Hawks one point away from victory.
Scarlett Bernard (Westwood, Mass.) delivered the match-clinching point with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Amanda Quinn at No. 6.
Mancini outlasted Gomez 6-3, 2-6, 15-13 at No. 4, while Palmieri closed the match with a 7-6 (7-0), 6-2 victory over Sophia Padro at No. 5.
Salve Regina earned its lone point at No. 3 singles, where Murphy defeated Bache 6-4, 3-6, 10-7.
Roger Williams returns to CNE competition Saturday, Oct. 3, when it hosts Nichols College at noon at the RWU Tennis Courts.
