BRISTOL, R.I. — The Roger Williams University Women's Tennis team returned to the win column with a 7-0 sweep of the University of Hartford in Conference of New England (CNE) action Tuesday afternoon at the RWU Tennis Courts.
Roger Williams improved to 11-1 overall and 6-1 in the CNE, while Hartford fell to 3-6 overall and 2-5 in conference play.
The Hawks swept the three doubles matches to secure the opening team point. Ella Mancini (Middlebury, Conn.) and Adriana Palmieri (Southington, Conn.) started the afternoon with a 6-1 victory over Maddie Pearlman and Isabelle Simino at No. 2 doubles.
Valentina Abarca (Riobamba, Ecuador) and Iris Gkrekou (Athens, Greece) clinched the doubles point by defeating Lia Gosselin and Victalia Deida 6-1 in the top flight. Ashlyn Keating (Ludlow, Mass.) and Emma Blanchard (Dayville, Conn.) completed the sweep with a 6-2 win over Natalie Lamb and Lora Acquario at No. 3.
Roger Williams carried the momentum into singles play, winning all six matches in straight sets.
Scarlett Bernard (Westwood, Mass.) earned the first singles point with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Acquario at No. 6. Palmieri followed with a 6-0, 6-0 win against Lamb at No. 5.
Gkrekou clinched the team victory in the No. 2 position, defeating Pearlman 6-0, 6-0.
Megan Bache (Westbrook, Conn.) added a 6-2, 6-1 win over Simino at No. 3 before Abarca topped Gosselin 6-0, 6-1 in the top flight. Mancini closed the afternoon with a 6-2, 6-1 victory against Deida at No. 4.
Roger Williams travels to Milton, Massachusetts, on Saturday, Oct. 17, for a noon CNE match against Curry College.
