DUDLEY, Mass. — The Roger Williams University Field Hockey team scored twice in the opening four minutes and received goals from three players in a 3-1 Conference of New England (CNE) victory over Nichols on Saturday.
Libby Corsetti (Arlington, Mass.) led Roger Williams with a goal and an assist, while Brodie Loveland (West Milford, N.J.) and Reese Jefferson (Dighton, Mass.) each scored. The Hawks finished with a 29-6 advantage in shots, including a 20-4 edge in shots on goal, and earned seven penalty corners to Nichols' three.
Corsetti opened the scoring just 1:32 into the contest, converting a penalty stroke for her second goal of the season. She then assisted on Loveland's ninth goal of the year at 3:10, giving Roger Williams a 2-0 lead.
The Hawks controlled the first half, outshooting the Bison 18-0 while taking all four penalty corners before the break. Nichols goalkeeper Fallyn Belisle made six second-quarter saves to keep the margin at two.
Nichols cut the deficit to 2-1 at 42:27 when Evelyn Linehan scored off an assist from Emma Bianculli. Roger Williams answered 2:11 later, as Jefferson scored her fifth goal of the season with 22 seconds remaining in the third quarter to restore the two-goal advantage.
The Hawks outshot Nichols 6-1 in the fourth quarter and did not allow a shot on goal over the final 15 minutes to secure the victory.
Emma Sheldon (Suffield, Conn.) paced Roger Williams with six shots, while Loveland and Jefferson each put all four of their attempts on target. The Hawks totaled three saves, and Belisle finished with 15 stops for Nichols.
Roger Williams improved to 7-3 overall and 2-1 in conference play, while the Bison dropped to 4-6 and 2-2 in the CNE. The Hawks are set to take on UMass Dartmouth on Tuesday, Oct. 6 at 7:00 pm on Bayside Field.
