BEVERLY, Mass. — The Roger Williams University Women's Tennis team suffered its first loss of the season Monday afternoon, falling 6-1 to Endicott in Conference of New England (CNE) action at the South Tennis Courts.
The Hawks moved to 10-1 overall and 5-1 in the CNE, while Endicott improved to 6-1 overall and 5-0 in conference play.
Endicott secured the opening doubles point by winning two of the three matches. Megan Bache (Westbrook, Conn.) and Adriana Palmieri (Southington, Conn.) earned Roger Williams' doubles victory, defeating Sophia Eicke and Gabby Mazzeo 6-3 at the No. 2 position.
Emily Leclerc and Caroline Sutliffe topped Valentina Abarca (Riobamba, Ecuador) and Iris Gkrekou (Athens, Greece) 6-3 at No. 1, while Abbey Fleming and Amber Woods edged Claire Dwyer (Manchester, Maine) and Ella Mancini (Middlebury, Conn.) 6-4 at No. 3.
Eicke opened singles play with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Palmieri at No. 5. Leclerc followed with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Bache at No. 3 before Mazzeo clinched the match for the Gulls by defeating Abarca 6-4, 6-2 in the top flight.
Woods added a 7-5, 6-4 victory over Scarlett Bernard (Westwood, Mass.) at No. 6 before Mancini put Roger Williams on the board. Mancini defeated Sutliffe 6-4, 7-5 at No. 4 singles.
Gkrekou captured the opening set of the final match at No. 2, but Nadia Uzelac rallied to earn a 2-6, 6-3, 10-5 victory.
Roger Williams returns home Tuesday, Oct. 13, to host the University of Hartford at 4 p.m. at the RWU Tennis Courts.
