NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Roger Williams University Wrestling team placed fourth on Sunday at the NEWA Futures Invite, as the Hawks tallied 94.5 total points, finishing behind host Coast Guard, Johnson & Wales, and Vermont State University – Castleton.
The top finisher for the Hawks was Gordon Murray (Porter Corners, N.Y.) who took the top spot at 174 pounds. Murray opened his day with a 6-0 win by decision, before earning a pair of major decision wins by scores of 14-4, and 15-6. The Hawks 174 pounder then earned a 4-2 victory in the semifinals and finals to take the top spot.
Matteo Eagleson (Mount Olive, N.J.) also finished inside the top three in his respective weight class, placing third. After wins by scores of 6-3 and 7-3, Eagleson fell in his semifinal match before rebounding for a win by fall in the third-place match against Springfield's Alex Oberc.
Tommy Iasello (White Plains, N.Y.) and Brian Schreck (Miller Place, N.Y.) each finished fourth at 157 pounds and 165 pounds, respectively. Iasello battled his way to the third-place match after opening the day with three straight decision victories, followed by a 5-0 loss in the semifinals. Iasello then fell in the third-place match to end his day 3-2. Schreck also posted a 3-2 record, falling by major decision in his semifinal and third-place matches.
Michael Toppan (Gloucester, Mass.) and Gavin McKenna (Kingston, Mass.) each finished in sixth at 285 and 149 pounds, respectively, to round out the Hawks' top finishers of the day.
Roger Williams will return to competition on Saturday, Feb. 28 at 10:00 am at Coast Guard for the NCAA Division III Northeast Regional Championship.
