Baseball: Hawks Fall to Stockton, 16-6

AUBURNDALE, Fla. – The Roger Williams University Baseball team jumped out to an early lead but could not hold off Stockton, falling 16-6 on Wednesday morning at Lake Myrtle during spring break action.

The Hawks came out strong in the first inning. Noah Hester (Old Saybrook, Conn.) opened the scoring, crossing the plate on an RBI double by Jack Tubman (Bellingham, Mass.). Will Florio (San Jose, Calif.) followed with another RBI double down the right-field line to give Roger Williams a 2-0 lead.

Roger Williams extended the advantage in the second inning with four more runs. Hester drove in Riley Carew (Simsbury, Conn.) with a single to right field before Luke Miele (Wellesley, Mass.) doubled to bring home Evan Brenner (Andover, Mass.). Tubman then delivered again with a two-run single, scoring Miele and Hester to push the Hawks ahead 6-0.

Stockton answered in the bottom of the second with an RBI single from Jimmy Casey, cutting the deficit to 6-1. The Ospreys struck again in the third inning when Yenuelle Rodriguez hit a grand slam to center field, scoring Joe Gmitter, Nick Avagnano, and Liam Schwinn to give Stockton a 6-5 deficit.

Stockton took control in the fourth inning, plating seven runs to move ahead 12-6. Joe Gmitter highlighted the inning with a two-run double, while Max Kaplan and Evan Palmer each drove in runs. Wild pitches later in the inning allowed two more runs to score. Stockton continued to add insurance runs, scoring once in the fifth and three more in the sixth to extend the lead to 16-6.

Roger Williams recorded 11 hits in the game. Tubman led the Hawks with a 3-for-4 performance and three RBIs, while Hester added two hits with a walk and an RBI. Miele and Florio each contributed RBI doubles.

Tyler DiCecco (Rumford, R.I.) took the loss on the mound for the Hawks, allowing seven runs (five earned) over 3.1 innings. Several relievers followed in relief as Stockton finished with 11 hits and 16 runs.

Conner Praschil earned the win for the Ospreys, tossing five scoreless innings in relief with eight strikeouts to secure the victory.

Roger Williams moved to 2-4 on the season, while Stockton improved to 3-2. The Hawks will be back in action on Friday, Mar. 13 with a doubleheader against Fitchburg State in spring break action.
