Softball: Hawks' Florida Swing Ends with Loss to North Central

CLERMONT, Fla. — Roger Williams University closed its Florida trip Thursday afternoon with a 4–2 loss to North Central (Ill.) in nonconference softball action.

North Central struck first in the bottom of the third inning. Gwen Shouse led off with a single and later advanced to third before Nicole Stone lifted a sacrifice fly to left field, bringing Shouse home for the game's first run and a 1–0 Cardinals lead.

Roger Williams answered in the top of the fifth. Skye Merrow (Hudson, N.H.) opened the inning with a single and Alexia Tsonis (New Bedford, Mass.) followed with a base hit. After both runners moved into scoring position, Lucy Maurao (Holliston, Mass.) lined a two-run single to left field, scoring Tsonis and pinch runner Grace Forsythe (Woburn, Mass.) to give the Hawks a 2–1 advantage.

The Cardinals responded immediately in the bottom half of the fifth with three runs to reclaim the lead. Kayla Lindberg singled and later scored when Gracie Vlach tripled to center to tie the game at 2–2. Moments later, Nicole Stone singled up the middle to drive in Vlach and give North Central a 3–2 lead. The Cardinals added another run when Kayla Crabtree was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, forcing in Reese Johnson to extend the lead to 4–2.

Roger Williams threatened in the sixth when Kayleigh O'Connor (Southington, Conn.) singled to center to start the inning, but North Central reliever Juliana Maude retired the next three batters to keep the Hawks off the board the rest of the way.

Maurao led the Hawks offensively with a 2-for-4 performance and both RBIs. O'Connor, Merrow, Adrianna Amaral (Taunton, Mass.), and Tsonis each added hits as Roger Williams totaled six in the game.

Keira Quadros (East Providence, R.I.) (1-2) took the loss after allowing four runs on six hits with three strikeouts over 4.2 innings. Raegen Germano (Old Tappan, N.J.) tossed 1.1 innings of relief, allowing one hit while striking out one.

North Central starter Sam Schilf (2-2) earned the win after allowing two runs over 4.1 innings, while Juliana Maude closed the game with 2.2 scoreless innings and four strikeouts.

Roger Williams (4-5, 0-0 CNE) returns home next week to begin its New England slate. The Hawks will host Coast Guard in a doubleheader on Wednesday, March 18 at Paolino Field in Bristol, R.I., with first pitch scheduled for 3:00 p.m. The team will then welcome Rhode Island College for another home doubleheader on Saturday, March 21, beginning at 12:00 p.m. on Paolino Field.
