Men’s Lacrosse: Roger Williams Picks Up First Win of Campaign at Maine Maritime

CASTINE, Maine – The Roger Williams University Men's Lacrosse team saw their Spring Break week open with a victory, as the Hawks were able to pick up their first win of the season at Maine Maritime, 11-6, at Ritchie Field.

The Hawks outshot the Mariners, 43-27, while putting 30 shots on target, to Maine Maritime's 15. The Hawks went 21-for-28 on clear attempts, while holding Maine Maritime to 17-for-25. The Hawks also won the ground ball battle 52-36 and the faceoff battle 13-8.

Offensively, Drew LaChapelle tallied five goals with a pair of ground balls, while Brady Lee and Reece Moore had a goal and an assist with four ground balls each. Caleb McKeown and Matt Kennedy each had two goals in the game. On the defensive end, Kyle Zirn and Caden Mitchell each had four caused turnovers, with Zirn picking up six ground balls and Mitchell snagging five.  Alex Burrill had eight ground balls to lead the squad, while David Rizzo went 13-for-21 in his faceoff attempts.

For the Mariners, Trey Marcil had four points with three goals and an assist, while Ryan Parent tallied two points off a pair of goals. Ryan Dunstan had three caused turnovers with six ground balls in the game, while Bryce Crowell had six, going 8-for-17 in faceoffs.

In net, Aaron D'Aversa made nine saves while allowing six goals, and Ben Kieu had 19 saves with 11 goals allowed in the matchup.

The Hawks struck first in the opening 2:20 of play, with Moore, striking after a clear with a helper from Carter Shelton. The Mariners responded with a pair of goals from Ryan Parent and Tristan Reinhold, but Lee responded to level the score at 2-2 with 3:52 remaining in the opening quarter. Parent scored his 10th of the season to take a 3-2 lead into the second for Maine Maritime.

LaChappelle started the second quarter, leveling the scores, but a pair of goals by Trey Marcil put Maine Maritime up 5-3. The Hawks saw LaChapelle and Kennedy each tally goals to level the game, before LaChapelle, with 19 seconds before halftime break, scored a goal to take a 6-5 lead into the break.

After Marcil scored his third of the game to level the score, the Hawks took control, scoring five straight, with LaChapelle adding two more to his total, as the Hawks dictated play to an 11-6 win.

Roger Williams (1-3, 0-0 CNE) will host Kean on Wednesday, Mar. 11 at 12:00 pm before taking on Eastern Connecticut State on Saturday, Mar. 14 at 1:00 pm in Willimantic.
