MILTON, Mass. - Despite a two run lead in heading into the bottom of the eighth inning the Roger Williams University Softball team was unable to hold on against Conference of New England (CNE) foe Curry, falling 8-7, in extra innings.
The Hawks offense was powered by
Madison Moran (Attleboro, Mass.) who went 4-for-5 with a home run and a double. The Hawks also saw
Shannon Starratt (Lake George, N.Y.) go 2-for-5 in the contest, brining in a pair of runs, while
Skye Merrow (Hudson, N.H.) and
Grace Forsythe (Woburn, Mass.) each hit a home run in the game.
For Curry, Ana Tsonis went 2-for-4 with three RBIs, while Lindsay DesRoberts went 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs. The Hawks tallied 11 hits in the contest, while holding Curry to seven hits, with four errors. Curry left three runners on base to the Hawks' 10.
In the circle,
Raegen Germano (Old Tappan, N.J.) got the start, dishing out 3.0 innings, with two hits, and four runs, with none of them coming in earned.
Natalie Lundari (Flemington, N.J.) picked up the loss for the Hawks, throwing four total innings, wth three earned runs, while striking out four.
Curry saw Morgan Barmash get the start, dishing out 4.2 innings, while striking out two with three walks, and three earned runs.
Roger Williams opened the scoring in the second inning, with
Adrianna Amaral (Taunton, Mass.) on second after a stolen base, Forsythe hit a home run over the left field wall to put the Hawks up 2-0.
In the bottom half of the third, the Colonels responded with two runs coming in as Kailey Collins-Fiore reached on an attempted bases loaded sacrifice bunt, winding up at second after a throwing error by the Hawks, allowing two to score. A few batters later Anna Tsonis hit a double to left field, giving Curry the go ahead runs, and taking a 4-2 lead.
The Hawks began chipping away in the fifth when Moran came around to score on a wild pitch, cutting the deficit to one. In the sixth inning, the Hawks boost came from a lead off home run by Merrow, leveling the game at 4-4. The Colonels responded in the bottom half of the sixth, with a DesRobert double to left center.
The Hawks again leveled the score with a leadoff homer in the seventh, when Moran hit a ball to center to knot things up at 5-5, as Lundari held the Colonels scoreless in the bottom half of the seventh.
The Hawks struck first in extras in the top of the eighth, when Starratt hit a bases-loaded single up the gut, allowing
Hailey Williams (Vernon, Conn.) and Merrow to score, taking a 7-5 lead. Trialing, the Colonels saw Tsonis again respond, hitting an RBI single to center. With the bases loaded Colburn drew a walk, followed by a DesRoberts single through the left side of the infield, to take the lead and seal the game for Curry.
The two teams were originally scheduled to play a doubleheader on the day but the weather became a factor late in game one, causing a postponement of game two.
Roger Williams (10-6, 2-1 CNE) will travel to face Johnson & Wales on Friday, Apr. 3 for a CNE doubleheader, ahead of a non-conference road doubleheader at Salve Regina on Wednesday, Apr. 8.
