BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Baseball team defeated Curry 5-2 in a Conference of New England (CNE) matchup on Tuesday afternoon.

On the mound for the Hawks, Gianni Mercurio (Newbury, Mass.) earned the win in relief, tossing 5.1 scoreless innings. Mercurio struck out six while allowing just two hits and one walk. Ryan Camp (Cheshire, Conn.) secured the save, pitching a scoreless ninth inning with two strikeouts.

For Curry, Jack Keane took the loss, pitching 4.0 innings while allowing six hits and five runs (three earned).

Roger Williams wasted no time getting on the board, plating four runs in the bottom of the first inning. Devin Driscoll (Portsmouth, N.H.) scored on an RBI single by Noah Hester (Old Saybrook, Conn.). Later in the inning, Casey DeLorenzo (East Greenwich, R.I.) delivered a two-run single to right, capitalizing on a fielding error to advance to second and put himself in scoring position. Jack Tubman (Bellingham, Mass.) added a sacrifice fly to bring home another run and give the Hawks a 4-0 advantage.

The Hawks added one more in the third inning as Tubman reached on a fielding error, allowing Sam Arcieri (Westwood, N.J.) to score and push the lead to 5-0.

Curry threatened late, scoring two runs in the top of the eighth inning. Jorge Rodriguez drove in a run with a sacrifice fly before Anthony Figueroa followed with an RBI single to cut the deficit to 5-2.

However, the Hawks bullpen held firm, as Camp shut the door in the ninth to secure the win.

Roger Williams recorded nine hits in the contest. DeLorenzo led the way with two hits and two RBIs, while Driscoll and Luke Miele (Wellesley, Mass.) each collected two hits. Tubman added two RBIs for the Hawks.

Curry totaled seven hits in the game. Figueroa and Michael Frausto each recorded two hits, while Figueroa and Rodriguez drove in the runs for the Colonels.
