BIDDEFORD, Maine — The Roger Williams University Men's Lacrosse team took down UNE in a close overtime match, 8-7, in Conference of New England (CNE) action Saturday afternoon at Blue Bolt Field.

The Hawks began the first quarter taking the game to the Nor'easters as Jacob Parentau (Millville, Mass) scored a quick goal with an assist from Carter Shelton (Castle Rock, Colo). This momentum carried over throughout the first as Harrison Steffens (Fairfield, Conn) would score late in the first to put the Hawks up 2-0. However, the Nor'easters would weather the early storm as Preston Briggs put UNE on the board with 3:34 left in the first.

The second quarter picked up the action quickly as Brady Lee (Mattapoisett, Mass) continued the offensive attack with a goal in the early minutes. After that Hawks goal, neither team found any offensive success until the last five minutes of the quarter. The Nor'easters launched a strong flurry of offense as Stephen Fogarty and David Wilcox both found the back of the net to tie the game up 3-3 going into the half.

In the second half, the tide started to turn as the Nor'easters started the third quarter hot. Preston Briggs would get an early goal with an assist from August Hand, giving UNE their first lead of the game. The Hawks didn't take long before making the game even once again, with Steffens scoring his second goal of the game to tie the game back to 4-4 with just under seven minutes left in the third. This wouldn't be the end of the scoring success for the Hawks, as Shelton was able to score towards the end of the third from an assist by Ethan Mahoney (Stonington, Conn.) to put the Hawks up 5-4 going into the fourth quarter.

The fourth quarter had the most shots by both teams, with twenty shots and four goals scored throughout the quarter. Briggs got the ball rolling early in the fourth with an assist from Shea Fogarty to make the score 6-5 with just under fourteen minutes to play. The Hawks dug deep and performed under pressure with a clutch goal by Connor Russell (West Hartford, Conn.) from Mahoney to put the Hawks up 7-5. UNE wouldn't go down quietly as the Nor'easters scored back-to-back goals in 6 minutes by Stephen and Shea Fogarty to tie the game at 7-7.

Going into overtime, both teams had momentum and moments throughout the game. However, the Hawks dominated the extra time by holding UNE without a shot. The Hawks tallied four shots before finally winning the game with a goal from Caleb McKeown (Plymouth, Mass.) from Alex Daignealut (Winthrop, Mass) to close out the win.

Roger Williams (7-9, 5-3 CNE) will close the regular season on Wednesday, Apr. 22 at 7:00 pm against Johnson & Wales.
