SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Roger Williams University Softball team split the day with Western New England in Conference of New England (CNE) play. The Hawks dropped game one 8-3, before coming back to win game two 5-4.
Game One: WNE 8, RWU 3
Roger Williams struck first in the top of the first inning. Madison Moran (Attleboro, Mass.) and Shannon Starratt (Lake George, N.Y.) both came around to score on a fielder's choice by Adrianna Amaral (Taunton, Mass.), giving the Hawks an early 2-0 lead.
Western New England responded in the bottom of the second inning. Riley Kane scored on a sacrifice fly, aided by a throwing error, before another run crossed the plate on an RBI single by Shea McDaniel to tie the game at 2-2.
The Golden Bears took control in the third inning, as Angelees Carrasquillo delivered a two-run single to give Western New England a 4-2 advantage.
WNE added two more runs in the fourth inning. A bases-loaded walk brought in a run before Kane helped her own cause with an RBI double, extending the lead to 6-2.
Roger Williams got one back in the fifth as Moran doubled to center field to score Starratt, cutting the deficit to 6-3.
However, Western New England continued to add on, plating one run in the fifth on an RBI groundout and another in the sixth on a sacrifice fly to seal the 8-3 victory.
Roger Williams totaled nine hits in the contest. Hailey Williams (Vernon, Conn.) led the Hawks with three hits, while Moran recorded two hits and an RBI. Amaral drove in two runs for RWU.
On the mound for the Hawks, Raegen Germano (Old Tappan, N.J.) took the loss, pitching 3.1 innings while allowing six runs (four earned) on three hits with five strikeouts and five walks. Natalie Lundari (Flemington, N.J.) provided 2.2 innings of relief, giving up two runs on five hits.
Western New England finished with eight hits. Kane led the way with two hits and two RBIs, while Carrasquillo and McDaniel each drove in two runs.
On the mound for the Golden Bears, Kane earned the complete game victory, allowing three runs (one earned) on nine hits while striking out three.
Game Two: RWU 5, WNE 4
In the circle for the Hawks, Keira Quadros (East Providence, R.I.) improved to 8-2 on the season, tossing a complete game. Quadros allowed four runs (two earned) on six hits while striking out four and walking one.
For Western New England, Sophia Keays took the loss, allowing three runs over 1.2 innings of work.
Roger Williams got off to a strong start in the top of the first inning as Moran launched a two-run home run to left field, scoring Starratt and giving the Hawks an early 2-0 lead.
The Hawks added to their advantage in the fourth inning. Kayleigh O'Connor (Southington, Conn.) came around to score on an RBI single by Williams, before Starratt followed with a two-run home run to extend the lead to 5-0.
WNE mounted a late rally in the bottom of the seventh inning. A fielder's choice brought home the first run of the frame before Alyssa Ferriouolo delivered a three-run single, aided by defensive miscues, to cut the deficit to 5-4.
Despite the late push, Quadros closed out the game to secure the win for the Hawks.
Roger Williams recorded four hits in the contest. Moran and Starratt each hit home runs and drove in two runs, while Williams added an RBI.
Western New England totaled six hits in the game. Ferriouolo led the way with three RBIs, while Kane recorded two hits.
Roger Williams (17-9, 9-3 CNE) will host Endicott on Tuesday, Apr. 21, before heading to UMass Dartmouth on Wednesday, Apr. 22.
