FALMOUTH, Maine — The Roger Williams University Women's Tennis team remained unbeaten with a 7-0 Conference of New England victory over the University of New England on Saturday afternoon at Foreside Fit Tennis Club.
The Hawks improved to 8-0 overall and 4-0 in conference play, while the Nor'easters fell to 4-3 overall and 1-3 in the CNE.
Roger Williams swept the three doubles matches to secure the opening team point. Megan Bache (Westbrook, Conn.) and Adriana Palmieri (Southington, Conn.) earned the first victory with a 6-2 decision at No. 2 doubles.
Ella Mancini (Middlebury, Conn.) and Claire Dwyer (Manchester, Maine) clinched the doubles point with a 6-1 victory at No. 3. Valentina Abarca (Riobamba, Ecuador) and Iris Gkrekou (Athens, Greece) completed the sweep by winning 6-1 at the top flight.
The Hawks won each singles match in straight sets.
Scarlett Bernard (Westwood, Mass.) opened singles play with a 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 6. Mancini followed with a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 4, placing Roger Williams one point away from securing the match.
Gkrekou delivered the clinching point with a 6-1, 6-2 victory at No. 2 singles. Abarca added a 6-3, 6-1 win at the top flight before Palmieri recorded a 6-2, 6-2 victory at No. 5.
Bache completed the shutout with a 6-4, 6-4 decision at No. 3.
Roger Williams returns to action Sunday, Sept. 27, at the Salve Grass Court Tournament. Competition is scheduled to begin at noon in Newport, Rhode Island.
