BRISTOL, R.I. — The Roger Williams University Women's Tennis team improved to 2-0 with a 7-0 victory over Bridgewater State University on Friday afternoon at the RWU Tennis Courts.
Roger Williams swept the three doubles matches to secure the opening point before winning all six singles flights. Bridgewater State fell to 0-1 with the loss.
Valentina Abarca (Riobamba, Ecuador) and Iris Gkrekou (Athens, Greece) earned a 6-1 victory at No. 1 doubles, while Megan Bache (Westbrook, Conn.) and Adriana Palmieri (Southington, Conn.) matched that score at No. 2. Ella Mancini (Middlebury, Conn.) and Scarlett Bernard (Westwood, Mass.) completed the sweep with a 6-1 win at No. 3.
Mancini opened singles play with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Ana Eccles at No. 4. Palmieri followed with a 6-0, 6-2 win against Maeve Snyder at No. 5 before Bache clinched the team victory by defeating Ava Alves, 6-1, 6-4, in the No. 3 flight.
Gkrekou topped Aislyn Kelliher, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 2, while Abarca defeated Morgan Smith, 6-3, 6-2, in the top flight. Claire Dwyer (Manchester, Maine) completed the shutout with a three-set comeback against Samantha Bettencourt at No. 6, earning a 4-6, 7-6 (7-4), 10-6 victory.
Roger Williams returns to action Saturday when it travels to Wheaton College for a noon match in Norton, Mass.
