BRISTOL, R.I. — The Roger Williams University field hockey team opened its 2026 home opener in dominant fashion Saturday afternoon, shutting out Plymouth State, 5-0, at Bayside Field.
The Hawks (3-0) have now recorded back-to-back shutouts to open the 2026 season, following a 4-0 road victory over Lasell in their previous contest. RWU continued its strong defensive start against Plymouth State, limiting the Panthers to just four shots while controlling the game offensively with 54 shots of its own.
Hawks Break Through in Second Quarter
Roger Williams came out hot in the opening quarter, generating 17 shots and creating several scoring opportunities. Ava Hogenkamp hit the post early, while the Hawks were awarded multiple penalty strokes but were unable to convert.
The Hawks finally broke through with 6:33 remaining in the second quarter. Reese Jefferson, a first-year midfielder from Dighton, Mass., scored the game's opening goal at 23:27 to give RWU a 1-0 advantage.
RWU continued to apply pressure throughout the remainder of the half, finishing the first 30 minutes with a 30-0 advantage in shots.
Hawks Explode for Four Goals in Third Quarter
The Hawks broke the game open in the third quarter, scoring four times to turn a one-goal advantage into a commanding 5-0 lead.
Lexi Yost, a senior midfielder from Swansea, Mass., doubled the RWU lead at 35:44 before Eva Wood, sophomore midfielder from (Sandwich, Mass.) found the back of the cage at 37:21 to make it 3-0.
Just under four minutes later, Brodie Loveland, sophomore forward from (West Milford, N.J)., scored her first goal of the afternoon at 41:14, extending the Hawks' advantage to 4-0.
Loveland struck again with 10 seconds remaining in the third quarter, completing her two-goal performance at 44:50. Anna Kruggel, senior midfielder from (Scituate, Mass.), recorded the assist as RWU took a 5-0 lead into the fourth quarter.
Hawks Defense Completes Shutout
While the Hawks' offense produced five goals, the RWU defense was equally impressive, keeping Plymouth State off the scoreboard for all 60 minutes.
The Panthers managed just four shots, with two finding their way on target. Shae O'Neill, sophomore goalkeeper from (Medway, Mass.), played all 60 minutes and made two saves to earn the shutout.
Plymouth State's two shots on goal came in the second half, but O'Neill turned aside attempts from Ellie Monahan in the third quarter and Lexi Berrettini in the fourth.
Hawks Dominate
Roger Williams controlled the statistical battle from start to finish, finishing with a 54-4 advantage in shots and a 7-2 edge in shots on goal. The Hawks also earned three penalty corners compared to one for Plymouth State.
Loveland led the Hawks with 10 shots and two goals, while Hogenkamp added nine shots. Jefferson finished with six shots and a goal, while Yost recorded three shots and a goal. Mikayla Hanel also generated five shots off the bench.
In total, five different Hawks found the back of the cage, with Jefferson, Yost, Wood and Loveland accounting for the five RWU goals.

Roger Williams hits the road for a two-game road stand, beginning Monday, September 7, when the Hawks travel to Connecticut College for a 4:00 p.m. matchup.
RWU will then head to Boston on Wednesday, September 9, to take on Simmons at 5:00 p.m.
The Hawks return to Bristol on Saturday, September 12, when they open Conference of New England play against the University of New England at Bayside Field. The conference opener is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
