NORTON, Mass. — The Roger Williams University Women's Tennis team remained unbeaten with a 5-2 victory over Wheaton College on Saturday afternoon at the Clark Tennis Courts.
Claire Dwyer (Manchester, Maine) and Ella Mancini (Middlebury, Conn.) opened doubles competition with a 6-2 victory over Lily Runyan and Taylor Wilson at No. 3. Valentina Abarca (Riobamba, Ecuador) and Iris Gkrekou (Athens, Greece) secured the doubles point by defeating Laila Haraj-Sai and Asia-Leigh Hollis, 6-4, in the top flight. Megan Bache (Westbrook, Conn.) and Adriana Palmieri (Southington, Conn.) fell to Maya Huerta and Taylor Shanefelter, 7-5, at No. 2.
Bache earned the first singles point with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Maya Brennan at No. 3. Wheaton responded with victories at Nos. 6 and 1 before Mancini defeated Wilson, 6-2, 6-1, in the No. 4 flight to put the Hawks one point away from the team victory.
Gkrekou clinched the match at No. 2, rallying past Hollis for a 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 victory. Palmieri completed the scoring with a three-set win over Huerta at No. 5, prevailing 7-6 (7-5), 4-6, 10-8.
Roger Williams returns home to host Clark University at noon Saturday, Sept. 12.
