BRISTOL, R.I. — Roger Williams University first-year Iris Gkrekou (Athens, Greece) was named the Conference of New England Women's Tennis Player of the Week and Rookie of the Week, as announced by the league office Tuesday.
Gkrekou posted a combined 6-0 record during the opening week of her collegiate career, going 3-0 in singles competition and 3-0 alongside Valentina Abarca (Riobamba, Ecuador) at No. 1 doubles. Her performance helped Roger Williams begin its season with victories over Simmons University, Bridgewater State University and Wheaton College.
In the Hawks' 6-1 season-opening victory over Simmons, Gkrekou defeated Amoli Vad, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 3 singles after teaming with Abarca for a 6-4 doubles victory.
Gkrekou moved into the No. 2 singles flight against Bridgewater State, where she earned a 6-1, 6-2 win over Aislyn Kelliher. She and Abarca added a 6-1 victory at No. 1 doubles as Roger Williams recorded a 7-0 shutout.
The first-year completed her unbeaten week by rallying past Wheaton's Asia-Leigh Hollis, 3-6, 6-2, 6-3, at No. 2 singles. Her victory clinched the Hawks' 5-2 road win and improved the team to 3-0. Gkrekou and Abarca also defeated Laila Haraj-Sai and Hollis, 6-4, in doubles competition.
Roger Williams returns to action Saturday, Sept. 12, when it hosts Clark University at noon at the RWU Tennis Courts
